Studio or One-Bedroom?

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

What do you call a single hotel room with a bed in it?  Is it a studio or is it a one-bedroom?  It seems as though most hotels as well as AAA like to call them one-bedroom units which means The Appenzell Inn is out of touch.

At The Appenzell Inn we call a single room unit a Studio, a unit with a Living Room plus a separate Bedroom is a One-Bedroom, a unit with a Living Room and two Bedrooms is a Two Bedroom unit.  Because our Living Rooms also contain a sofa sleeper, we should probably call our units One, Two, and Three Bedroom types.  We also call some of our Rooms, Studio Suites because they are larger one-room units with kitchenettes, eating areas and sitting areas.  Technically we could call them One-Bedroom Suites, but we don’t think that would be accurate.

As a marketing strategy, I suppose it’s smart to make your rooms seem more than what they are, but our strategy is to be honest with our guests so that they are pleasantly surprised, not dissapointed when they arrive.

If you thought shopping for a terrific Estes Park hotel was going to be easy, maybe not, unless you do your homework.  At The Appenzell Inn, what you see and what we describe are what you’re going to get, and if something is not quite up to snuff, we’ll do everything within reason to fix it.

Thank you for visiting this site and thank you for considering The Appenzell Inn, your Estes Park hotel.

Back from Grand Lake

Friday, August 27th, 2010

It took a little over two hours door to door from Grand Lake to Estes Park including about 20 min. worth of stops due to road construction.  The good news is, the road is mostly complete with just a few miles of repaving left on the Western side.  The bad news is that the Pine Beetles really have done a number on the Western side of Rocky Mountain National Park with dead trees as far as you can see.  There are pockets of green which gives us some hope that things will be coming back fairly soon.

Grand Lake seems to be holding its own, what with the beetles and the economy.  There’s even a new theatre being built on the main street, which is more than I can say for Estes Park. (Just a little prod to the people in office)  Grand Lake is a neat little village with a bit of an old west flavor and a few primitive looking cabins, houses and businesses.

We had a little luck fishing even though we weren’t able to spend a lot of time nor were we able to pick the optimum times.  Keeping our 10 year old granddaughter from getting bored can be a challenge but so far so good.

It’s nice to come back to our home at The Appenzell Inn, refreshed and ready to take on a busy fall season.  The Elk are moving on down and looking very fit and ready for the annual mating season called The Rut, which is a big attraction.  For that reason alone you should book a few nights at your favorite Estes Park hotel, The Appenzell Inn.

We’re Planning an Escape!

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Even though living in Estes Park is like being on a perpetual vacation, it’s still nice to see something different, both for the variety it brings but also to re-familiarize ourselves with other areas which might be of interest to our Guests here at The Appenzell Inn.

Today we’re taking our granddaughter over to Grand Lake for a couple of nights.  We’ll try some fishing, a little shopping, check out a couple of restaurants, and always be on the lookout for Moose.

While the accommodations in Grand Lake aren’t as numerous as Estes Park hotels, there are a few nice places that we can recommend as you travel from or to your destination at The Appenzell, your Estes Park hotel.

Why an Indoor Pool?

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

You would think in a climate where you only have a few weeks a year where you can enjoy an outdoor pool, more Estes Park hotels would have indoor pools like the one at The Appenzell Inn.  Ours has 6 skyights plus windows or sliding glass doors on three sides, so there’s plenty of light and ventilation.  We keep the water temperature set at 83-84 degrees which has proven to be comfortable for all but a few sissies.

There’s no better exercise than a half hour or more just playing games with the kids or swimming laps or even running in place.  And it’s easy on the joints.

When deciding on which Estes Park hotel to stay at this time, don’t forget to see if they have a pool for your use. No? Then it’s time to make The Appenzell Inn your Estes Park hotel for having a good time and exercise too.

lull Before the Storm

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Even though I’ve told you all that the last part of August was a wonderful time to be in Estes Park, you’re still going to wait a few more weeks to book your room at The Appenzell Inn. That’s OK, as we still have some availability, but why not sneak away this week to get in some uncrowded hiking and wildlife viewing or just a leisurly walk downtown along the river.  The weather has been perfect and our room rates are at their lowest this season, so what are you waiting for?

And bring you fishing gear as there are still some large trout that have endured through the summer.  Book your favorite Estes Park hotel today; The Appenzell Inn, for the view, a great room and warm hospitality.

Watch Out for the Elk

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Coming back to Estes Park from DIA we took the long way through Boulder and Nederland.  The forest looked wonderful because of the wet spring and early summer with just a tinge of yellow starting to shown on some of the Aspens.  Just as we were dropping into Estes, the traffic in front slowed to a stop because a herd of Elk had decided to cross.  After about 50 or 60 crossed, including two large bulls, we were able to ease our way through.  They looked very healthy, again due to the great growing season.

With the Elk starting the rut soon, you need to be constantly on the alert, both for not running one over, but also for not missing out on any part of the spectacle.  Elk have a very narrow focus at this time of year so don’t be expecting them to be looking out for you.

The prime time for seeing Elk is now through October with the peak being in September and early October, about the time the trees are at their best color.  So book your favorite Estes Park hotel today, The Appenzell Inn is waiting for your call.

Two More Weeks!

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Two more weeks until Labor Day Weekend and you haven’t made reservations at The Appenzell Inn yet.  What’s your plan Stan?  Wait till the last minute and spend the weekend in a not-so-nice motel when you could have been here?  Maybe you hope to get a last minute deal, but guess what Charlie?  You may find all the good rooms at a good price are gone and you’re going to pay premium for what’s left.

Give us a call now!  Or get on line and book your weekend at your favorite Estes Park hotel, The Appenzell Inn.

Paying Tolls From DIA

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

If you are coming to Estes Park from Denver International Airport (DIA), you will want to take E-470 as a shortcut to I-25 North.  The problem is, E-470 is a photo toll road and even though it’s well worth the $3 toll, your rental car company may make it much  more expensive.  Some rental car companies will charge you a daily fee of say, $8, for every day you have the car, even though you will only use the toll road twice,-coming and going.  So if you were staying in Estes Park for a week you would pay $56 for $6 worth of tolls.

In case you aren’t familiar, a photo toll is when a camera takes a picture of the vehicles license #, plus the driver, and then at the end of the month, will mail a bill to the car owner.  You would think a rental car company could just charge your CC plus a fee but that’s not the way it works for many of them.

So when booking your rental car for a trip to your favorite Estes Park hotel, check with the company to see what kind of fee you will pay for a little convenience, and then head on up to The Appenzell Inn.
