Still Going

Monday, October 18th, 2010

The mild weather we’re experiencing in Estes Park, Colorado is supposed to hang in there for the rest of the week and who knows how much further?  We aren’t complaining as this is ideal weather for getting out into the wilderness of Rocky Mountain National Park.

If you have checked The Appenzell Inn website recently you will see some of the lowest rates of the year can be found from now through May, with a few exceptions for holidays.  We’re open all year, and even though we don’t have a ski slope, there’s still plenty to do and places to enjoy a fine meal.

For this time of year, your favorite Estes Park hotel room should have a fireplace and an in-room two person Jacuzzi, which you will find in most of the rooms at the Appenzell Inn.  Our indoor pool is always kept at 84 degrees for your comfort, and soon we’ll be opening Strudel’s Cafe where we’ll be able to serve you a ‘real’ hot breakfast.

Reasonable rates, all the amenities, and a freindly staff; The Appenzell Inn, Estes Park, Colorado.

Colorado Color

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

We’re nearing the end of an exceptionally colorful and mild fall season in Estes Park.  At The Appenzell Inn our cottonwoods are a brilliant yellow contrasting with the dark reds of the Canadian Cherry, orange Maples and green pines.  We wish we could produce an air-freshener that could duplicate the sight and the aroma; exhilarating and intoxicating are overused and inadequate words to describe the effect.

While the flowers at The Appenzell Inn slowly succumb to the nighttime temperatures that have gone below freezing, there’s still a few that will probably hang in for a while.  We know the snow is coming, and that’s it’s own good thing, but watching all of the hard work that goes into our flowers slowly fade away is always a bit sad.

Good news: Strudels Cafe is getting closer to opening as we received all of the cooking equipment and sinks, plus our plumber is supposed to show up on Monday.

There’s still plenty of good Colorado fall weather to enjoy so come on up to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park and book a room at your favorite Estes park hotel, The Appenzell Inn.  We look forward to seeing you.

Food Show

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

As we get closer to opening Strudels Cafe for breakfast and dinner, we find there are many fun parts of the business; like attending shows put on by the various suppliers.  Today it was a show put on by Shamrock Foods at the Merchandise Mart in Denver and we had a great time sampling different suppliers foods and looking at all the neat and cleaver merchandise and equipment.

We have made it our goal to offer a “real” breakfast at The Appenzell Inn as opposed to the corporate blandness that most hotels call a Continental Breakfast.  Next we hope to offer a deli-style lunch-to-go for the guest who wants to spend the day in Rocky Mountain National Park hiking and sightseeing without having to make another stop on the way in.

In the evening we plan on serving a varied dinner menu with some traditional Swiss dishes which can include Italian and French as well as German.  We’ll also offer American classics including a darn good burger with fries.  For dessert we’ll have ice cream’s, gelatos and sorbet’s and of course our signature Apple Strudel.

In order for The Appenzell Inn to be your favorite Estes Park hotel, we feel we need to offer more to our customer than what you would find at your typical hotel; better rooms, a better property, and more amenities of a higher quality.  We aren’t where we want to be yet, but every year we add to or improve what we offer at The Appenzell Inn, Estes Park, Colorado.

A Little Rain

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Finally we’re getting a much needed rain; it’s only rained once since July and the vegetation needs some moisture to get through the winter in good shape.  It’s also nice to have water come out of the faucet and without rain once in a while, we’re in trouble as all of water comes from the streams and rivers flowing out of Rocky Mountain National Park.

We’ve had people comment that our water is like having bottled water on tap.  It should be good as it used to be snow or rain not too many days before, and our treatment plants in Estes Park are state-of-the-art.  Clean water, clean air, and a clean comfortable room at The Appenzell Inn: the essence of Colorado.

The rain will bring renewed freshness to the air which makes getting out on the terrific hiking trails or sidewalks of downtown Estes Park, all the more enjoyable.  So give us a call and book a couple of nights at The Appenzell Inn; your favorite Estes Park hotel.

Say Something Nice

Monday, October 11th, 2010

If your mother once told you not to say anything if you can’t say something nice, you are probably doing your favorite Estes Park hotel a disservice.  The management of The Appenzell Inn doesn’t like to hear complaints, nobody does, but we need to have a true picture of how we are doing our job and your feedback is essential.

Was the hairdryer working, was the coffee quality what you expected, was the room clean and fresh, were there enough towels at the pool, was our staff courteous and knowledgeable, and was the mattress satisfactory?  If we don’t hear about the problems or even minor irritations, it’s hard to improve, and that’s what we want to do.

Speaking of making improvements, we are receiving equipment for our new Kitchen just about every day.  We’ll keep you posted on the expected opening of Strudel’s Cafe at The Appenzell Inn.

Snowy Flattop

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

Cooler weather is definitely here, and yesterday brought us a heavy bank of clouds up against the western side of the mountains and spilling over toward Estes Park.  It’s hard to describe to people how it can be snowing in Rocky Mountain National Park, but here in Estes we will have blue skies and warmer temperatures.

Some of our guests, who were determined to get the most out of their trip, went hiking up the Flattop Mountain trail which starts at the Bear Lake trail-head in the park.  The trail takes you up above treeline with spectacular views and the possibility of spotting a Ptarmigan or Pika.  It’s also possible to experience some foul weather and yesterday it was snow squalls which our guests thought was just great.  Our kind of people; those who can enjoy nature in whatever form it takes on the day they are here.

So don’t be fretting about what the weather is going to be like on the day you want to visit your favorite Estes Park hotel.  It’s the same as what they say about a bad day fishing being better than a good day at work.  We have never experienced a bad day at The Appenzell Inn; not that the weather has been perfect, but just the fact that we are here in these beautiful surroundings with the best that Colorado has to offer just outside our windows.

So come on up to Estes park, Colorado and The Appenzell Inn where we never have a bad day.

Always Open

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

We are asked on a regular basis, “what are the hours that Rocky Mountain National Park is open?”  The answer is; they never close.  Trail Ridge road over the top will close for the winter and other sections may be temporarily closed for maintenance or emergencies, but the majority of the park is open 24/7 all year.

Likewise, Estes Park and The Appenzell Inn are also open all year because no matter the weather, Estes Park, Colorado is a wondrous place to be.  It may be cold and blowing but it gives a different perspective to the raw side of nature.  How do the animals survive, especially the herds of Elk that you’ll see?  How did the Native Americans who first called this area home, get through the harsh winters?

And then you come back to your very comfortable room at The Appenzell Inn, turn on the fireplace, fill up the Jacuzzi, pour a glass of wine and truly relax while watching the snow fall over the mountains.  Your favorite Estes Park hotel awaits your arrival.

Colorado’s Best

Friday, October 8th, 2010

Everything about Colorado is terrific, but when people ask us what’s the best place to visit, we have to say Estes Park, Colorado.  Not that we’re biased, but it really is the best part of Colorado.

And where’s the best place to stay in Estes Park, Colorado?  Here again, not that we’re biased, but we think it’s The Appenzell Inn.  We do have a few rooms left this weekend and this next week looks to continue with some decent weather mixed with a little colder weather and snow.  Good stuff!

So book a room today at your favorite Estes Park hotel, The Appenzell Inn; we’d love to see you.

Deer vs Aspen

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

A sneaky buck Mule Deer jumped over a low spot in the back fence surrounding The Appenzell Inn and decided he had to do everything in his power to destroy a small Aspen tree we planted about 3 years ago.  Now we have a foot high stump, and much as we love the wildlife, this deer has ticked me off.  Why is it that an animal has to completely destroy it’s food source; can’t it just eat a few leaves and allow the rest to continue growing?

In Rocky Mountain National Park, they’ve had to begin a program of culling the Elk herd because of this same kind of activity.  They have destroyed so much that some other species such as Beaver have been greatly reduced in number.  When people say Mother Nature is in balance, they’ve got it all wrong.  Nature is never in balance; it keeps swinging this way and that following the one law that dominates all others,- the law of survival.

Every plant and animal does what it does naturally in order to survive and reproduce,- some winning, some not.  We have evolved to where we are today, and will continue to evolve into the future with only humans possessing the ability to recognize the consequences of their actions and alter their behavior accordingly.

So I really can’t be angry at our nuisance deer, rather I need to devise a better barrier between him and our Aspen.

The other good thing about the wildlife is that it’s one of the main reasons people visit Colorado and especially Estes Park.  So even though we’ve got one less Aspen tree, you’ll still find beauty and wildlife at The Appenzell Inn, your favorite Estes Park hotel.
